3 must-see exhibitions during Berlin Art Week

Every September, the creative pulse of Berlin quickens, drawing art lovers, collectors, and curious minds from all over the world. Berlin Art Week (BAW) has become an essential fixture in the international art calendar, offering an extraordinary platform for contemporary art that reflects the city's reputation for experimentation, diversity, and cultural discourse. The 2024 edition promises to continue this legacy, showcasing a dynamic array of exhibitions, performances, and events across the city.

If you're planning to attend, here are three standout recommendations from the 2024 program that you won’t want to miss:

1

Alexandra Pirici — Attune at Hambuger Bahnhof

Alexandra Pirici presents a major new site-specific installation with live action and music in the Historic Hall of Hamburger Bahnhof. The exhibition launches a new series of annual commissions in the museum’s Historic Hall to be opened in conjunction with Berlin Art Week.

HARRY NURIEV“The Foam Room” at DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM

HARRY NURIEV (b. 1984) is a New York and Paris-based artist, founder and creative director of Crosby Studios (est. in 2014). Nuriev's creative practice spans a broad range, including immersive environments, art installations, public spaces and objects.

The Foam Room features a mirrored installation that generates and releases large amounts of white foam, gradually filling the underground gallery. The reflective surfaces, combined with the volumes of foam, create an atmosphere that provokes visitors to engage, reflect, and immerse. Conceptually, the foam party represents a fascinating phenomenon where millions of air bubbles are suspended within a thin film of water held together by soap molecules. This ephemeral wonder can rapidly expand and vanish, mirroring the fast-paced nature of industry and our fleeting attention to spatial and economic concerns. In today’s consultative era, art is often reduced to a mere party trick, with the artist serving as a commercial tool or marketing gimmick—much like the fleeting nature of soap foam, which can burst and disappear in an instant.

Nuriev’s debut solo exhibition, “The Foam Room,” opens on Friday, Sept 13, 2024, from 6–10 PM.
